Works for Me Wednesday - Swish & Swipe

2:30 PM 1 Comments
Hey everyone! I'm back with another post...but without my camera cable. How annoying is that? I have tons of great pictures to download and can't! Hopefully I'll remember where I put it soon so I can show off my birthday present that just arrived today (and only a week late! *grins at the sender*). It's super fabulous and awesome and I can't wait to show you! Plus, I have new kitty pictures and new pictures of the kids and just tons of new stuff! C'mon cable, come out of hiding!

But, until I can show y'all some pictures, I'm going to talk about the swish and swipe. What's that you're probably asking...but hang on, I'm going to tell you right now. The swish and swipe is something that I do every morning in my bathroom after my shower. After I shower and get dressed, I take my damp towel and swipe it across the bathroom counter, edge of the tub and the toilet...yes, the toilet. Then, I take the toilet bowl brush and swish it around inside of the toilet. What does all of this do? Well, it keeps my bathroom looking clean until Saturday's when I do a proper cleaning. So, even if the rest of my house is a disaster, my bathroom is always company (and emergency illness!) ready! And, it only takes all of about 30 seconds.

What works for all of you? Do you have any secret tips? Leave me a comment here and make sure you head over to We Are That Family to sign the Mr Linky there!

Tackle It Tuesday - Errands

11:41 PM 0 Comments
Well, this is late and I don't have my pretty picture! I store all of those images on a separate drive and of course, I don't have it downstairs with me. Ahh well. I did tackle something today, though! I drove over to Hastings and visited the Secretary of State's Office. While there, I applied for my enhanced driver's license and switched the address on my van registration. I also stopped into the kids' school and dropped off Ben's glasses because he left them here on their nightstand. A quick stop off at the grocery store, a couple of hours of kgb work and I'd say I had a fairly productive day. :)

Menu Plan Monday - Crockpot Meals 2!

3:34 PM 1 Comments
Happy Monday, all! Yes, that's right, it's Monday again which means time for my menu! I never did get here on either Thursday or Friday last week. That's because...Surprise!...I found out on Wednesday night that the kids didn't have school on Friday and that I needed to pick them up a day early. Then, the boys and I spent Friday having a family fun day here at the house. I am happy to report that "slavedriver" Ben, who checks the house progress every 2 weeks when he gets here, declared "Mom, you're making big progress! I'm proud of you!"

So, last week, I did do a bit of cooking out of the Slow Cooker meals cookbook. I really need to start remembering to halve or more those recipes! I end up eating a few days of leftovers instead of enjoying a new recipe. I have to say that the chicken and dumplings was just as tasty as I remembered. Everyone loved the taco casserole on Saturday night and I can't wait to make it again.

This week, I'm sticking to the same cookbook and maybe mixing in a few other things! I may have company coming for the weekend, so I need to plan for that as well. This week's cookbook is still the Betty Crocker new Slow Cooker meals cookbook and here are my yummy choices!

Monday- Smoky Apple Butter Ribs (pg 56-57)
Tuesday- Leftovers
Wednesday- Chicken Rotini Casserole (pg 63)
Thursday- Leftovers
Friday- Cheesy Ravioli Casserole (pg 23)
Saturday- Out/Leftovers/Beef Stroganoff (pg 68)
Sunday- Cowboy Stew (pg 67)

And that's my menu! I'll be posting Part 2 of that rib recipe in just a few minutes, so make sure that you check out both Parts 1 and 2. I have them cooking in my crockpot right now and it smells delicious!

(almost) Wordless Wednesday

11:31 AM 2 Comments
Wow, I haven't done a great blogging job this week, have I? I meant to all day yesterday but then I ended up tackling bills (which would have been my post) and then got a massive headache and totally forgot in the end. Shoot.

Well, I'm back today and I have exciting news. It's my birthday! Yep, 33 years ago, I was born. Now, that's exciting to me because if I hadn't, who would blog all these wonderful things for all of you? Hehe...

Just as exciting though is that I've finally gone wireless in this house! The wireless router I had when I moved in didn't work and I couldn't afford another one but yesterday, I got a surprise early birthday present. My friend Jim, who sometimes comments here, sent me a new wireless router for my birthday and with a bit of help last night, I got it all hooked up! Darn ip/dns conflicts anyway! I tested it out last night and now I can blog from anywhere in the house, not just my bedroom so yay! Happy Birthday to me!

Menu Plan Monday - Crockpot Meals!

1:39 PM 2 Comments
Good morning! Oops, Good afternoon and Happy Monday! Yes, that's right, it's Monday again which means time for my menu! Now, I do have to apologize for not posting here on Friday. It was just a bad day and I just never got here. Shame on me, but that's how it goes sometimes.

So, last week, I managed to get some cooking done out of the Heart Association cookbook and I have to say that the recipes, though tasty, were a bit time consuming. I'm sure that I'll use them again but only on nights when I have plenty of time to do some cooking and probably some people to do cooking for.

This week, I'm switching cookbooks! I pulled out one of my favorite cookbooks ever and I'm treating myself to a week (hopefully) of crockpot meals. I do have family coming for the weekend, so it will be a great easy way to enjoy them and not spend tons of time slaving away in the kitchen! This week's cookbook is the Betty Crocker new Slow Cooker meals cookbook and here are my yummy choices!

Monday- Winging it..too late to do cookbook.
Tuesday- Home Style Chicken and Dumplings (pg 60)
Wednesday- Chicken Rotini Casserole (pg 63)
Thursday- Leftovers
Friday- Family Favorite Chili (pg 19)
Saturday- Taco Casserole (pg 54)
Sunday- Smoky Apple Butter Ribs (pg 56-57)

And that's my menu! Don't be surprised if you see this cookbook again. It is filled with soooo many delicious recipes.

Time for Me Thursday

12:07 PM 1 Comments
Brrr...is it cold where you are? I wouldn't say that it's precisely cold here, but the house thermostat read 65 when I checked it a few minutes ago. I'm starting to think that it's time to start closing up some of the windows before I go to bed at night. I love this time of year, but I like to be warm and cozy, not waking up shivering. *grins*

Which has given me a delicious idea for today's post. I think I mentioned yesterday that one of my favorite things about this time of year was hot cocoa. Now, I confess. It can't be just any hot cocoa. Yes, I'm a cocoa snob it seems. Ok, that's not true. I won't turn my nose up if you hand me a mug of something, but I have a preference.

A few years ago, I was lucky enough to spend a summer in England. Man, I loved that summer. There were so many wonderful people to spend time with, so many things to see, so many things to try! One of the things that I tried and got hooked on was Cadbury's Drinking Chocolate. Actually, now that I think on it, I was hooked before then. Some friends of mine who were stationed over there sent me some as a thank you gift and that was it! So, when I went to England, you know darned well that I brought some back with me! Since then, I've convinced friends of mine, who are over there, to send me some for my birthday each year so I always have some in stock.

So today, I'm going to find some time to make me a mug and then perhaps I'll curl up in my favorite chair and just relax with it. What will you do for you?

Fine printish type stuff: After receiving some interest, I'm going to attempt to add a MckLinky to these and my Friday posts. I can't wait to see if anyone adds their links!

Works for Me Wednesday - Crock Pot Cooking

1:28 PM 0 Comments
Happy Wednesday! Is it a lovely day where you are? It certainly is here! The air has just that lovely little nip of cold in it which tells me that Autumn is truly here and I love it! I love sweaters and cozy blankets! I love hearing the leaves crunch underfoot as I go for a walk. I love hot chocolate and cold cider and nummy donuts that you can only get this time of year. Know what else I love? My crockpot!

Every year, about this time, I seem to remember what an amazing piece of technology my crockpot is. It's probably (oh goodness, this is dating myself..) 13 years old now but it still works like it did on the day I pulled it out of the box. It doesn't have any bells or whistles. There's no timer or digital anything on it, but I love it! It's seriously probably my most favorite kitchen "gadget" that I own and I own more than a few!

So, what's so great about my crockpot? It does the work for me! Yesterday, I made an Irish stew. Now, the recipe originally called for me to spend all this time in front of my stove and oven. Did I want to do that? Nope! So, instead, I layered all of the ingredients, just like it said in the recipe, into my crockpot and turned it on low and I walked away. Eight hours later, I opened up that lid again and it smelled divine! It tasted pretty good too!

I love the fact that I can throw my ingredients into it in the morning and then walk away until dinnertime and not have to worry about it. In fact, I'm thinking that next week's menu week is going to be an all crockpot week. I have some incredibly delicious recipes for the crockpot and I can't wait to share with all of you and to enjoy them, myself!

Oooh...I can't believe it, but I almost forgot! I'm the guest poster over on Forever Daisies blog today! Go and check it out! She has some great giveaways and posts happening all week for Creative Week!

Until tomorrow,

Tackle It Tuesday - The Bathroom

12:00 AM 4 Comments
Wow, I had a totally feeling sorry for myself day today. Does that ever happen to any of you? I tried to keep myself going, but I admit that it just didn't happen like I wanted it to. I'm not giving up though. I won't fall into the emotional rut that I have in the past. It's a scary place to be and I'm working at staying out of it.

If any of you follow flylady.net, you'll know that this week, she's in the bathroom zone. I've been doing zone cleaning for years and for me, it's a really good thing. With all of the upheaval in my life over the past few months or so, I decided that I needed to do that with this home and since she does a chunk of the work for me, I'm totally going with the Flylady and her zones.

So, this is all fascinating, I can hear you say..but what are you tackling precisely? Well, my bathroom. I realized yesterday that I don't think there's a single room in this house that doesn't have a box in it and most of them have multiple boxes. My goal for tomorrow is to tackle the last box that is in the bathroom and have it be the first room "done." Then, on Wednesday, I can finish cleaning it and it gives me 2 days left to this week to work on another room in this house..perhaps more in "the wall."

Take care all! I'm going to take Miss Pity Pants and put her to bed and hopefully in the morning, she'll wake up as Miss Productivity!

Menu Plan Monday - Early?!?

12:09 AM 1 Comments
It's Monday again. Now oddly enough, usually I like Mondays, but tonight (see? I haven't even gone to bed Sunday night yet and I'm posting!) I'm missing my boys. Their dad picked them up just after 5pm today and it's left me missing them tons and seriously thinking about the situation with their dad and his new fiancee. I dunno. I honestly don't want to get into it here ...well really, I just don't want to get into it, so I'm going to post a menu instead! *grins* Did I ever mention that sometimes I get a little punchy when I'm tired?

Now, last week, the menu thing happened but the cooking thing didn't. It was a crazy, mixed up week and well boo on it. So, this week, I'm re-using part of last week's menu and just filling in the gaps. It's not lazy, it's umm..being green! Yes, that's it! I'm reusing and recycling? Right, like I said..punchy...So here we go!

Monday - Irish Stew (pg 199)
Tuesday - Mexican Beef & Corn Bread Pie (leaving out bell pepper & using cornbread mix) (pg. 190-191)
Wednesday - Marinated Steak (pg. 174)
Thursday - Crispy Oven-Fried Chicken (pg. 128)
Friday - Swedish Meat Loaf w/ Dill Sauce (pg 184)
Saturday - Leftovers
Sunday - Just wingin' it...possibly more leftovers..

And there you have it folks, my menu for the week. What are all of you having?

Finish It Friday

12:43 PM 1 Comments
It's Friday! Yay! Ok, normally I'm not quite this excited about the end of the week, but today is special. I get to go and pick my boys up from their first week back at school. I can't wait! I miss those turkeys.

Of course that also means I need to get a ton done today! Isn't that how it always goes? So far, I've managed to call the vet's office, shower, get dressed and talk to my ex-husband. We're not going to go there because that will take me out of my happy place.

Let's see, still to do: call Ben's insurance caseworker, get the kittens around to stop in at the vets, eat something, call and try to finish the over the phone application to do a focus group, jot down last minute notes on shopping list, finish this blog (grins), drive into Hastings, stop at the vets, stop at K-mart and pick up a birthday card for Donna (ex's fiancee's birthday is tomorrow), get the boys from school, get their stuff from Peter's place, go get something for dinner, stop at the dollar store (need more hangers!), go grocery shopping and drive home! Whew! Sometime in there, I also need to remember to feed/water the cats and to flip the laundry over. Busy, busy, busy!

Lots of wrapping up the week going on here. How about at all of your places?

Time for Me Thursday

2:55 PM 1 Comments
Thursday..Thursday...Yes, today is Thursday. The holiday at the beginning of the week just totally threw me off. I have to keep reminding myself what day of the week it is. So, today is Thursday. The calendar has declared it and I will agree that it is so.

Life is going ok here..slowly getting things accomplished and things in order. It's probably not going as fast as some people think that it should, but it's going as fast as it is going. I will admit though that sometimes I look around and realize just how long we've been here and I get a little frustrated. But, I have to remember that this move was chaos which is going to take unpacking longer than if it'd been organized. I also have to remember that I am just one woman, with 32 years worth of stuff surrounding her. I say 32 years because a) that's how old I am (least for about 2 more weeks) and b) because yes, I admit it. I am a bit of a packrat. However, I am proud to say that I have a small, but growing give away pile. Who knows, I might even give away a couple of items right here on the blog.

So, what am I doing for me today? I'm reminding myself that I am not lazy. I'm taking the time to appreciate me for me and to notice the things that I have gotten done instead of the things that still need to be done. I am proud of me and I hope that all of you are proud of you too.

What things make you proud to be you? Your creativity? Your work ethic? Your beautiful smile? Post about it and let me know too! I don't have a ton of readers, but those that pop in here are all very beautiful people!

(not so) Wordless Wednesday

2:41 PM 0 Comments
Can you believe it? Summer is winding down..well, so the calendar says. To me, once it hits September 1st, summer is done. Then, if I let it linger, it is officially done once school starts. The boys started 3rd and 4th grade today. Roger got the teacher he wanted and I'm hoping that Ben likes his teacher. I don't think he really had a preference so I can't wait until Friday when I can hear all about their first few days and how they liked it. Roger wasn't sure he wanted to go back so that will be fun to listen to.

What may be even harder to believe is that the boys and I took this picture way back on August 19th. That's right. We were walking home from downtown and spotted this laying on the sidewalk. Outside, now, our walnut tree is shedding leaves with every breeze that flows through. Autumn is basically here and I couldn't be happier. It's my favorite time of year. Is anyone else in the mood for some pumpkin donuts and cider? I so need to stop by Cotant's Farm Market soon. They have the most delicious donuts and cider that are made on site not to mention Honeycrisp apples that will be out in another month or so. Yum!

Fall already?

Tackle It Tuesday - Household Chores

3:53 PM 0 Comments
Ok, I confess. I've slacked off a bit with the daily chores that need to be done around the house. I let all of the boxes overwhelm me and the next thing I knew, I was just behind on everything! Well, I just told myself that the only way it was going to get done was if I did it. Sadly, there is no magic cleaning fairy that will come while I sleep and do the work for me.

So, I'm going to give all of you a sneak peek at my to do list for today and let you know how I'm doing on it so far. It's not a huge list, but I've discovered that if I have a smaller list, I tend to putter around and get a heck of a lot more done than was on my original list! I don't know why, but then again, my mind works in mysterious ways...*grins*

  1. Morning Routine
  2. 2 Loads of Laundry
  3. Menu Plan for Week
  4. Tackle It Tuesday post
  5. Unload Dishwasher
  6. Reload Dishwasher and get it going
  7. Give kittens their meds.
  8. ** Posted similac to freecycle
  9. ** emailed Chad about roofing

As you can see, I've already done a huge chunk of the list! The items with the ** by them are items that I did and they weren't even on the original list. Now, I'm off to flip over the load of laundry that I put into the washer this morning and before I know it, I'll be able to cross number 2 off that list as well.

What are all of you tackling today?

Menu Plan Monday - A Day Late

3:08 PM 0 Comments
I know! I'm late! Today was one of those days where it was a holiday and it changed my routine and I plum forgot to post! But, I'm going to make up for it right now.

So let's see..news...no news. The van is still sitting in Lansing at the mechanics. As of this morning, they didn't have the part yet. If they get the part early enough in the day, they can get it done same day. Otherwise, it's the next day. What does all this mean? It means they have no idea when my van will be done. It also means that I will be missing the open house at the boys school tonight. This was not how I wanted to start off their school year. Ugh!

Now, onto the menu. I'm starting a new..what's the word I want...experiment. I have a ton of cookbooks. I love cookbooks. So, each week, I'm going to attempt (notice I say attempt) to plan the menu out of a different cookbook. This will help me weed out any cookbooks that just won't work for our family plus it will let me try some new recipes! Each week, I'll tell you the name of the cookbook and if possible, even post a picture of it so y'all can see.

This week's choice (simply because I found it sitting on top of the dryer, waiting to be put away) is American Heart Association's Low-Fat, Low-Cholesterol Cookbook. Like most of you, I'm hoping it doesn't taste as bland as it sounds. So, here we go:

Monday - Gone
Tuesday - Mexican Beef & Corn Bread Pie (leaving out bell pepper & using cornbread mix) (pg. 190-191)
Wednesday - Marinated Steak (pg. 174)
Thursday - Crispy Oven-Fried Chicken (pg. 128)
Friday - Pizza or Dogtrack, assuming I have the van back
Saturday - Tacos (because they're one of Ben's favorite foods)
Sunday - French Toast (because both boys love it so very much)

What are you making this week?

Finish It Friday - Last Day of Summer

10:03 AM 2 Comments
Well, it's here. One of the few days of the year that I just dread. Today is the "last day of summer" here in our house. Now, I know that technically summer isn't over for a couple of more weeks, but for me, it always ends on the day that the boys go back to their dad's for the school year. I hate today. As a mom, I feel like they should be with me. It's my job to pick them up from school and to do homework with them. Instead, it's not me. It's Peter's fiancee, Donna. This troubles my mom heart a lot. It doesn't make it any easier when my baby tells me that he doesn't want to go back. He wants to be with me. He's concerned with a bit of bullying that happened last year and that mom won't be there to help him deal with it this year if it happens again. It's hard for me to reassure him that mom is close enough now that I can come over if he needs me to. I stayed home with the boys for the first 5-6 years of their lives. I regret that I can't be there like I should now.

So, today's finish it project is one that I've put off until the last possible moment for the past 3 years. Today, I have to finish packing up the boys and having all of their stuff ready by 5pm when there father could be here. Tonight, the house will seem empty but for today, I'm going to enjoy hearing their laughter, maybe even some of their brother'ish bickering and I'm going to collect all the loves, hugs and kisses that I can.

Time for Me Thursday

12:24 PM 2 Comments
This summer has flown by. The boys go back to their Dad's house for the school year tomorrow and it makes me one sad mama. We've had such a great summer together. We've gone nowhere, done nothing but we've had so much time together. The boys have learned it can be fun to play outside and that maybe video games aren't a necessity. We've cooked together and done laundry together. We've done pretty much everything together and they've learned how to do so many things and learned because they asked to be taught. I'm going to miss them so dang much. Luckily, the move has made it possible for me to spend time with them during the school year. They'll be here every other weekend and I'm now close enough that I can go to school events. I'm only disappointed that due to the van breaking on us yesterday, I will probably miss the school open house and I very much wanted to go so I could meet their teachers and such. Everyone please pray, knock on wood, whatever you do that the van will get fixed quickly and for a reasonable price. (Edit: The van estimate is $550. I don't know what we're going to do.)

So what am I doing for me today with everything that is going on? I'm going to get me some extra kid loves and hugs and kisses. Ben kept giving me hugs yesterday because he knew how worried i was about the van. Roger offered to sell wedgies to help pay for it. If a kid gave him one, it was $5. If a grown up did, it was $10 (because grownups pull harder). I have two of the best kids in the world and there's nothing I need more today than to spend time with them.

Have a great day all!

World Whomped Me Wednesday

1:24 AM 1 Comments
Today was just one of those days. It started out so good. The boys and I had lunch, got the back of the van emptied, the table into the kitchen and headed out to Lansing. This really nice couple there had a corner computer desk that they were going to give to me (go freecycle!). It was about a 45 minute drive but worth it for a nice computer desk that we need. That's the one problem with having been in that tiny apartment. Now I need storage units and pieces of furniture. Luckily, freecycle is letting me fill in the gaps as I can.

Anyway, we're just coming up to the onramp for the freeway when this semi stops suddenly in front of me and I slam on my brakes. As I do that, I feel something give in the brakes. But, I'm on top of the freeway on ramp and I figure it was probably in my head, so we keep going. Then, I discover it wasn't in my head. Oh my god, I'm on the freeway with almost no brakes. I'm trying not to freak out as I ask the kids to be quiet so I can try to figure out what to do. We got off at the next exit (which was the one we needed anyway for the stuff) and I tried to find this guys house because there's nothing in that stretch of road and I thought god, he'll have a phone or know what to do..something.

Except, I miss the turn..and end up pulling into a Shell station so I can ask for directions/try to figure out what to do. I could barely stop the van at that time and in my panic, all I could think was get home. Well, that wasn't in the cards because when I went to get back into the van, I noticed a puddle of yellow flowing out from under the van. I called Justin because well, I didn't know who else to call that wasn't at work or in a meeting or ..ok, he could have been in both of those, but I knew he wouldn't yell at me for interupting. He tried to calm me down and I looked up and somehow it happened that the gas station had a service station right next door.

The boys and I walked over and they pulled the van in and discovered the brake line had snapped at the flex line. They didn't have the part and couldn't get it today so I was left figuring out how I was going to get the boys and I back home, which was a 30 minute drive. Well folks, there are still good people out there. I'd been talking to this older gentleman who was one of their regular customers and after nearly offering me a car to use (he didn't because it was old and he didn't know how well it ran these days), he offered to take the boys and I back home. In fact, he offered to go help me pick up the desk if I wanted. I politely declined. I couldn't accept that from him ( and his wife) plus it wouldn't have fit in their car.

Well we made it back to the house and they made sure we had our keys and everything to get in before heading out. Then, I came inside and emailed the people about the desk (I'd already called and spoken to them twice keeping them updated.) and they wrote back, offering to drive it out here and deliver it for us! Can you believe that? Someone was clearly watching out for us today. Nobody got hurt, we got home and we're still going to get our desk. Now, I just need to win the lotto to pay for the van repairs and hope it doesnt really take them almost two weeks to fix it.

So...my question today...Who can you be a good samaritan for?

Tackle It Tuesday - Lawn Work

11:08 AM 3 Comments
Ugh! Where did allergy season come from? I woke up this morning sneezing, watery eyes and half congested. Dang nabbit! I have too much to do to deal with allergies. Hopefully a benadryl will help clear me up enough that I can get into things. I have a lot to tackle today!

The big one though is getting the lawn mowed. All summer long I've tried to get our lawnmower to start and I just can't. Finally, I gave in and asked the neighbor if I could use theirs. They're being super great and as long as I put some gas into it, they don't mind at all. I started mowing last night but our grass is so thick and it was still wet. It just kept clogging up the lawnmower. So, one of my first tasks of today is to go down and put gas into both of our gas cans and then come back and to tackle that lawn!

What are you tackling today?
