Book Review: Horrorstor

10:00 AM 0 Comments
Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Columbus, Ohio. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring wardrobes, shattered Brooka glassware, and vandalized Liripip sofa beds clearly, someone or something is up to no good.

To unravel the mystery, five young employees volunteer for a long dusk-till-dawn shift—and they encounter horrors that defy imagination. Along the way, author Grady Hendrix infuses sly social commentary on the nature of work in the new twenty-first century economy.

A traditional haunted house story in a contemporary setting (and full of current fears), Horrorstör comes conveniently packaged in the form of a retail catalog, complete with illustrations of ready-to-assemble furniture and other, more sinister accessories. We promise you’ve never seen anything quite like it!

====================
I cannot write about this book without mentioning the book itself. As an avid Ikea fan (their catalog is better than porn to me...seriously.), when I opened up the envelope and this book fell out, I was in love. The entire thing is laid out to look just like one of the catalogs. Of course, then I had to get up the nerve to start actually reading... Those who know me, know that horror and scary things aren't my usual first choices. So, what did I think? I think it's a fun read. It's not particularly scary (though I'll never walk into an Ikea store the same way), but it can be pretty gruesome in parts. I remember at least one time that I had to put the book down, go do something else..and then ran back to the couch because I had to know what was going to happen next. I'll admit that I got pulled in just like everyone else who tells me that they read this kind of thing for the thrill...and that I'm hoping that there might be a second book which gives us a really solid resolution to the question of, "But...but...what happened after that?"  I know that sounds as if the book didn't have an ending. It did and it was a good one, but I might be hooked....

Book Review: A February Bride

3:47 PM 0 Comments
Allie left the love of her life at the altar - to save him from a lifetime of heartbreak. When a Valentine's Day wedding brings them back together, she struggles against her family's destructive history. Can Allie ever realize that a marriage is so much more than a wedding dress?
History repeats itself when Allie Andrews escapes the church on her wedding day - in the same dress passed down for generations and worn by all the women in her family - women with a long history of failed marriages. Allie loves Marcus but fears she's destined to repeat her family's mistakes. She can't bear to hurt Marcus worse.
Marcus Hall never stopped loving Allie and can only think of one reason she left him at the altar - him. When the two are thrown together for his sister's Valentine's Day wedding, he discovers the truth and realizes their story might be far from over. Can Allie shuck expectation and discover who she is as a bride and in the Bride of Christ? And if she ever walks down the aisle, what dress will she wear?
===========================
I've read a number of the novellas in this series and still, the opening to this book had me going, "Woah..what just happened there?" At first, I loved the idea of a wedding dress being passed down through the generations, but it didn't take me long to realize just how it could make a girl feel if that dress was tied to nothing but failure and bad memories. Thank goodness for Marcus' sister and her loving nature! I'm not going to give anything away here, but let's just say that her idea of wedding preparation had me laughing and seeing how his family never stopped loving her warmed my heart. This series is almost over, but it's never too late to pick up a good book.

Book Review: The Brickmaker's Bride

8:00 AM 0 Comments
Yearning for a fresh start, Ewan McKay travels with his aunt and uncle from northern Scotland to West Virginia, promising to trade his skills in the clay business for financial assistance from his uncle Hugh. Hugh purchases a brickmaking operation from a Civil War widow and her daughter, but it's Ewan who gets the business up and running again. Ewan seeks help from Laura, the former owner's daughter, and he feels a connection with her, but she's being courted by another man--a lawyer with far more social clout and money than Ewan. Besides, Ewan has resolved he'll focus on making the brickmaking operation enough of a success that he can become a partner in the business
and be able to afford to bring his sisters over from Scotland.

But when Hugh signs a bad business deal, all Ewan's hard work may come to naught. As his plans begin to crumble, Laura reveals something surprising. She and her mother may have a way to save the brickworks, and in turn Ewan may have another shot at winning Laura's heart.

=======================
Historical fiction may very well be my favorite type to read these days. It's such a great escape into a time that so many have forgotten. In some ways, it really puts things into perspective when you read about how bricks were made and how backbreaking the work must have been. I don't know how they're made now, but I'm sure that it's a far more automated process than it was back then. The very fact that I have any idea how bricks were made post-civil war is a testament to this author's research and writing. In fact, she laid things out in such a way that I wouldn't be surprised if I'm on Google some time today looking for pictures of some of the machines that were used. Another point in Judith Miller's favor? The fact that none of her characters were perfect. In fact, some of them were so flawed that you loved to hate them. Every character had their own struggle and it created a wonderful read.

Book Blast: How to be Manly

Howtobemanlybabber

When Fatty Matty Sullivan finds a self-help book by former football great Tad Manly at a yard sale, he secretly starts following the old pro’s advice to get in shape and get the girl. Summer goals: lose the milkshake weight, join the football team, and turn himself into the kind of guy super hot Cassie Bale will love. But between taking care of his grandfather, trying to pass remedial Algebra, and getting caught up in his friend Jester’s half-baked weed-dealing schemes, Matty’s summer isn’t quite the game-changer he’d planned. When on top of it all his dad moves back in with his own plans to get rich quick, Matty suddenly has much bigger things to worry about than football and whether or not Cassie’s going to call him back. And it turns out that there might be more to being manly than he thought. Maureen O’Leary Wanket’s debut is a sharp, comic novel about trying to do the right thing… even when you’re not sure what that is.

Beatrice Zook knows God wants her to learn patience toward others. When assisting a family overwhelmed by triplets proves surprisingly successful, her confidence in dealing with others, both young and old, grows.

What neither she nor Ben will admit is that beneath all their bickering, attraction awaits. When friends decide to try and bring the couple together, will the pair be able to find true love? I want to say that I loved this book, but sadly, I just can't. I will say that I liked this book, though! For some reason, I really had a harder time than usual diving into this one. I think it was somewhere around chapter 3 before it got to the point where I was really enjoying reading it. That being said, once I got into it, I did really enjoy the book. The title fits this book perfectly. You really do watch Bea grow up and become the woman that she's meant to be. None of the characters are perfect and that makes the story feel all that more real. This is the final book in the series, but not having read any of the others, I didn't have any problems with keeping up with who was who and what their individual personalities were. Another good Amish read, but perhaps reading the other books might have made this one easier to jump into.

===============================
Historical fiction can either be wonderful or leave you lost. In this case, I'm voting for wonderful. The story was one that could have been set in any time period, but fit perfectly right where it was. The secrets were ones that could have destroyed people during that time period, but were ones that perhaps most of us could relate to, no matter the time period. The imagery was wonderful and more than once, I wanted to curl up in that walled garden and enjoy its beauty while I curled up with a good book.

Book Review: The Woman Code

3:00 AM 0 Comments
Every woman lives by a code, whether she realizes it or not. It informs how she treats others and herself, how much she expects of herself, and how far she is willing to go in order to find success. But is the code we're living by truly helping us create the lives of purpose and fulfillment we desire? Or are we sacrificing the deeper things for mere achievement?

In this inspiring book, Sophia A. Nelson calls women to live out a powerful life code that will lead them to purposeful and successful lives. With the wisdom that comes from experience, Nelson reveals to women

· the true meaning of "having it all"
· how to take better care of their minds, bodies, and souls
· how to achieve professional excellence without compromising their values
· how to find lasting love and purpose in life beyond their accomplishments
· how to navigate the sisterhood of women, to build collaboration rather than competition
· how to heal from past hurts, rejection, and life's inevitable storms
· and much more

The Woman Code is a way of living, of navigating life's challenges, and of interacting positively with other women. It's a way of pursuing our dreams and our deepest desires. It reveals a universal and timeless set of principles of the mind, body, and spirit that help women balance the demands of work, home, family, and friendship. The Woman Code not only calls on women to practice purpose in their lives, it shows them how to do it with grace.

Right now, I'm in a rebuilding me period of my life. It's not an easy place to be, but I'm happy that I'm at a place where I want to do it. So often, as I fight the Bipolar demons, it's easy to just lay down and wait it out. This time, I'm taking babysteps to fight back and to find me in all of it. As part of that, I've been reviewing cookbooks, healthy living books and yes, self-help books. As someone with a degree in psychology, it's hard to resist that last category. This book is really meant for those of us who have come from dark places, not necessarily for those who have already found themselves. Even within the first chapter, I found myself nodding. I know that this is a book that will go up on my "self reference shelf."

It's not often that I review a book and I'm not on here gushing over it. That happens because I generally only choose books that I think I'll love. After all, it's not fair to anyone if I choose something I know that I'm not going to enjoy. Sadly, this book is one that falls somewhere in between. The story idea is wonderful. I completely love the premise. However, the author really needed to use a good editor. There were parts of the story that were completely unnecessary and other parts that needed clarification. Throughout, the story continued to hold me, but as an editor, mistakes completely distracted me from the action. I would love to see this book re-released after going through a quality editor. Until then, I don't feel as if I can back it 100%.

Book Review: Never Let Me Go

One night. That’s all it was supposed to be. No strings. No complications.

Grace DeLeo didn’t do one night stands. She was a relationship girl through and through. All of that went out the window when she met Logan in a bar while he was in town on business.

Logan McFadden liked his no strings lifestyle. He loved his rules. Everything had a place, and there was no space for a relationship or feelings.

One night. That’s all it took to change things forever.

==================
An interesting take on love at first sight and one night stands, Never Let Me Go, kept me ignoring the chat I was in so I could keep reading. Luckily, nobody noticed I'd gone quiet! Grace and Logan seem so different and by the end of the book, you're left wondering if this will really work out how they want it to..and what will happen with her sister, Faith? And a hundred other questions..all in all, a really great read and I can't wait until Part Two comes out and fingers crossed I get to review it!

Book Review: Sidelined

8:00 AM 0 Comments
Chuck Pagano, head coach of the Indianapolis Colts, has become one of the most inspiring, intriguing personalities in the game of football. Only three games into his rookie season in 2012, Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia, sidelined by the side effects chemotherapy and months of recovery.

Undeterred, Pagano didn t let the confines of his hospital bed keep him from coaching: texts, calls, and emails kept him in constant contact with players, staff, and assistants. Motivated to be just as strong and determined as their ailing coach the team started winning game after game, compiling an impressive 11-5 record.

The players weren t the only ones touched by Pagano s hope and strength of character. Inspired by the tenacity and toughness of their beloved coach, a newcomer to town, thousands of fans united to form Chuckstrong, a movement that soon raised millions to help beat cancer. Pagano, fueled by his faith, his family, and his love of football, returned to lead the Colts to another winning season and the divisional playoffs in 2013.

With Pagano's practical lessons on living, loving, and leading, Sidelined, which includes an 8-page color photo section, inspires us all to stay in the game and never accept defeat.

====================
Ask my oldest and he'll tell you that unless it's his brother playing, mom doesn't care much about football. So, when this book came up as an option for review, I picked it up, not for me, but for him. After finishing it, I'm putting it on the family shelf, not his personal shelf. It has been a very long time since I picked up a book and less than halfway through it, I was reaching for a notebook to jot down some of the quotes. Even if you're not a diehard football fan, you can't help but be inspired. I've had this book for a couple of months, but something led me to pick it up the other night and the timing was perfect. I'm about to make some changes and this book is one that when things are tough, I'm going to come back to time and time again. I honestly cannot say enough positive things, so instead, I'm going to leave you with one of my favorite quotes from the book:

              "But regardless of our circumstances, they do not define us - not unless we give in and let                    them. Circumstances never determine who we are; they reveal who we are."
                                   -- Coach Chuck Pagano

Book Review: A January Bride

3:40 PM 0 Comments
What will happen when novelist Madeleine Houser's 'pen pal' friendship with a lonely widower takes an unexpected turn?
Who can work in a house that's overrun by contractors and carpenters? Not Madeleine Houser, a successful novelist who gladly accepts the help of her octogenarian friend, Ginny, to arrange for a temporary office in the charming bed and breakfast owned by Ginny's friend, Arthur. Maddie's never met the innkeeper - but a friendship grows between them as Maddie and Arthur leave messages for each other each day. To Maddie's alternate delight and chagrin, she seems to be falling for the inn's owner - a man who's likely many years her senior - and who she's never even met.
Arthur Tyler is a college professor who lost his young wife to cancer. Together they ran the bed and breakfast where Art lives, but without his wife, the house is missing warmth and cheer. He jumps at the chance to have author Madeleine Houser use the space that was once filled with guests. He, too, begins to enjoy the daily exchanges with Maddie, but a series of misunderstandings lead him to believe she's far from being a prospective date---even if he were ready to date again, which he's not.
When Maddie and Art finally meet and discover one another's identity, sparks fly. Even so, they each have obstacles to overcome in order for this winter romance to blossom.
====================
It's no secret that I love this series of novellas. In fact, I've enjoyed them so much that I actually went to the publisher and asked if I could review the two earlier ones that I had missed. This was one of those and I loved it as much as I loved the others. I'm not really sure what to say that I haven't said in my other reviews of this series. Arthur and Maddie were characters that were a total delight to get to know. Ginny made me smile and I'm pretty sure that I had house envy before the novella was done. If you haven't had the chance to read this series, I can't recommend it enough. They're all fast, easy reads that will have you pulled in before you know it.

Book Review: The Daughter of Highland Hall

7:30 AM 0 Comments
The Daughter of Highland Hall || Book 2, Edwardian Brides (Waterbrook Multnomah, October 2014)

What if the title, the estate, the life of security and splendor . . . what if it isn't enough?

Strong-willed and beautiful, debutante Katherine Ramsey feels ready to take the London social season by storm, and she must. Her family estate, Highland Hall, has been passed to older male cousin Sir William Ramsey, and her only means of securing her future is to make a strong debut and find a proper husband. With her all-knowing and meddling aunt as a guide, Katherine is certain to attract suitors at the lavish gatherings, sparkling with Great Britain's elite.

When a shocking family scandal sidelines Katherine, forcing her out of the social spotlight, she keeps a low profile, volunteering with the poor in London's East End. Here Katherine feels free from her predictable future, and even more so as a friendship with medical student Jonathan Foster deepens and her faith in God grows. But when Katherine is courted anew by a man of wealth and position, dreams of the life she always thought she wanted surface again. Torn between tradition and the stirrings in her heart for a different path, she must decide whom she can trust and love---and if she will choose a life serving others over one where she is served.
================================
Historical romance from a time period where everything seems to be changing...there are cars and yet debutante balls are a thing of normalcy. If you recall, I reviewed the first book in this series and very much enjoyed it. This book is absolutely no exception. I've never had my fingers crossed so hard for a character as I did for Jon. Watching Kate finally come into her own had me smiling and cheering. Meeting up with William and Julia again was a delight and as I turned the final pages, I couldn't help but wish that there were another book, just so I could keep reading. I'm thrilled to say that there is but bummed to report that it won't be out for an entire year!

BIO

Bella Ross wrote her first book (a novel) at eighteen a la Jackie Collins. But back then, unbeknownst to her, life was about to take her on a detour. As she set off on her new course, her dream of writing took a backseat. But after many years of worldly pursuits, the urge to write returned. With her love of travel, it is no surprise that her ‘Wanderlust Series’ & ‘Club Pluto Series’ take place in glamorous capitals or exotic locales around the world. Its the perfect backdrop/setting for her characters to explore and indulge their lusts and passions, loves and desires. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, or gallivanting all over seeking new inspiration, or people watching while enjoying a latte at Starbucks and jotting down ideas. She loves to hear from readers and looks forward to interacting through her social media channels. So stop by and say hi!

As part of my "Make Me Better" campaign, I'm about to embark on a major weight loss journey. As part of that, I've been looking for cookbooks that make healthier cooking options feel accessible. So, when this book came along, the cover copy sold me. On top of that, there's the cover itself. If the cover of this book alone doesn't draw you in, I don't know what to say. While I've never had grits that I enjoyed, this picture alone makes me willing to try them just one more time. I am thrilled to say that the book lives up to that cover. The photos inside will have you drooling and any cookbook that my fourteen year old going, "Oooh...we should make that one." is a winner in my world. The recipes are easy to follow and I didn't see any ingredients that can't be found at pretty much any local supermarket. I can't wait until we get into the kitchen to try out more yummy recipes!

For two decades Tyler Gibbons has been keeping a secret from his family. At the tender age of sixteen, Tyler embarks on a student exchange program. Sent to the Andean city of Ambato, Ecuador, he finds daily adventure as he tries to fit in at school, connect with his host family, and navigate through a world of beaches, volcanoes, and jungles. But tucked deep inside this year are events so profound, so unexpected, they forever shape the man he will become. Now, 25 years later, his mother pulls these soaring tales from her son, exposing, for the first time, the source of a deep unhappiness. While these memories contain the wounds of an unresolved past, they also possess the power to heal his painful present. Thoughtfully crafted and boldly told, Tyler’s journey takes the reader on a wild South American adventure, while illuminating a mother’s unyielding power to heal her child.

When I first chose this book to review, I went back and forth because I just wasn't sure that it was going to be something I enjoy. I'm happy to report that my choice was a good one! This book is wonderfully crafted. While it changes between the present and the past, there's not one ounce of confusion as to which time you're in. Watching the bond between Tyler and his mother grow even stronger pulled at the heart strings and I confess to tears more than once. Each character is well developed and the writing amazingly easy to read while not feeling like it's been dumbed down. All in all, well worth the read and the late night because I couldn't put it down.

Book Review: Stolen

8:30 AM 0 Comments
There is hope, even on the darkest of days

Katariina Rosenblatt was a lonely and abused young girl, yearning to be loved, wanting attention. That made her the perfect target. On an ordinary day, she met a confident young woman--someone Kat wished she could be like--who pretended to be a friend while slowly luring her into a child trafficking ring. A cycle of false friendships, threats, drugs, and violence kept her trapped.

As Kat shares her harrowing experiences, her ultimate escape, and her passionate efforts to now free other victims, you'll see that not only is sex trafficking happening frighteningly close to home--it's also something that can be stopped. Stolen is a warning, a celebration of survival, and a beacon of hope that will inspire you.

On a day where I received six different review books, this one stood out and called to me. Maybe it was the fact that the author's first name is so close to mine or that she went by Kat, just like I do sometimes...I don't know why the call came, but I have no regrets that it did. Reading through Kat's story, I realized just how vulnerable our children can be; how vulnerable I probably was. I was inspired as I read her story and how she got to where she is today. It made me stop and think, that maybe 38 isn't too late to do something with my life. Maybe I can somehow dig myself out of the financial mess and find a way to a better life for me and for my children. Yes, there is a lot of God mentions in this book, but even if your beliefs aren't in life with that, don't let it stop you from finding a book that tells a harsh reality that can teach you to not only protect but perhaps can also inspire you and your life.
