Unexpected Perspective

12:57 PM 0 Comments
Sometimes life opens your eyes in ways and in situations that you never would have expected. That's what happened to me this past week. I looked into the week expecting one thing and came out in a totally different place; a place that never, in my oddest dreams, would I have thought.

Tuesday was my birthday. For the past few months, I planned to spend the entire week with my best friend. Late Friday night, he messaged me and said it wasn't going to happen. To say I was crushed is the understatement of the century. I was devastated. I sank into a depression like I haven't had since I began my medication. To put it bluntly, I was lost.

Then, on Monday night, I decided to help someone else. My birthday was a lost cause, in my head, so why not give that time to someone else who could use it. On Tuesday morning, I dragged myself out of bed and headed to Pittsburgh. I'd never been there before, but this wasn't a tourist trip, it was an attempt at helping someone else save their own life.

I won't go into details because the details of their life aren't important. Let's just say that they were in a bad place and I felt that I was in a place where I could help improve things for them. They needed to prepare to move and I'm good at packing and they have 4 kids and I'm good with those too. It almost felt like this was what I was supposed to be doing.

I don't know if that feeling was right or wrong, but things didn't go how I thought they would go. I thought we would take the boxes that I had brought with me and pack them. When I walked into the house there, I sighed in relief because it would be easy to pack up within a week (their deadline). When I walked out, I walked out with 4 boxes packed because the two oldest children and I packed up some of their toys.  When I walked in, I expected to help take care of the four children, ages 9, 6 and 16 month old boy-girl twins.  I also expected it to be difficult because their mother acts like it's hard to manage that many kids, at those ages. When I walked out, I had fallen in love with four beautiful children who were a joy to be mom to for those four days. I realized that those children had become an excuse, in a difficult time, but to me, they will always be a bright, shining light in this world.

What I realized on the long drive home was that life isn't always what we think it is. I went into that situation thinking I was really going to be helping someone.  I walked out realizing that I had been taken advantage of and yet, I had no regrets because who I did help were four children. They will probably grow up and forget me, but I know, in those days, I made a difference to them, even if it were just in that period of time. I showed them that they can be loved, that nobody has to be left out and that even with all of them, there's nothing that can't be done.

I also realized that I can do more than I've let myself believe that I can do. Yes, I have limitations. I also have the ability to find solutions. Yes, there will be bad days, but that just makes the good days all that much more special and important. If I can take care of four children without batting an eyelid, I can take care of my own home and life. If I can be a better mom* to those four little ones, give them the love and attention that they deserve, maybe I'm not doing such a bad job with my own two. My life isn't perfect, but whose life is? Life can be tough, but if nothing else, four days away with four angels has taught me that I'm pretty darn tough myself. I can do this.

So, while maybe I didn't get what I expected, I did get some unexpected perspective...

*Better mom = better than I give myself credit for. It's easy for me to see the negatives in my own life and allow myself to sometimes think I'm not enough for my boys. By no means do I mean better than the four kiddos mom. She's actually a bit of a rockstar for going through what she is and keeping her kids from running amuck.

8:00 AM 0 Comments
Kylie Wilde is the youngest sister---and the most civilized. Her older sisters might be happy dressing in trousers and posing as men, but Kylie has grown her hair long and wears skirts every chance she gets. Local land agent Aaron Masterson is fascinated with Kylie from the moment her long hair falls from her cap. But now that he knows her secret, can he in good conscience defraud the U.S. government? And when someone tries to force Kylie off her land, does he have any hope of convincing her that marrying him and settling on the frontier is the better option for her future?

Three sisters, posing as men, fighting in a war...wow...it happened, but it's something that you don't stop to think about much in these modern times. I loved the spirit and the grit of all three sisters and really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed that even though the book takes place post Civil War, there are still themes that run through it that people can relate to today. How many folks have bullying parents or heck, even bullies that try to stop you from living out your dreams?  I'm looking forward to the next book in this series. What is it about me having to wait until Spring/Summer 2015? No matter. I have a feeling that Now and Forever is going to be well worth the wait.

I don't think that it's much of a secret that I'm a fan of Tawdra's. She writes stories that hook me on page one and don't let go until I've flipped the final pages. With this one, Meghan drew me in and then location descriptions hooked me. Yet another book where I have location envy before it's done. Tawdra's ability to write characters that are fully developed and are true to life draw you in, but the story will have you staying. If you get the chance to read any of her books, don't hesitate to pick them up.

Book Review: Plagues of Eden

10:00 AM 0 Comments
THE WHEEL SPINS. CHAOS IS UNLEASHED. 72 HOURS AND COUNTING UNTIL THE DEATH OF THE FIRSTBORN… The race is on to stop a madman bent on unleashing the ancient plagues of Egypt against the modern world. The countdown has begun. Only Army Chaplain Jaime Richards, along with rock star Mark Shepard, can stop the catastrophe and save the mysterious Sword 23 from the clutches of a psychopath... if they can find the true mastermind in time.
===================================
This is one of those books that I like it, but....

This really is a good book. It's fast paced, it's hard to put down *but* it's the fourth book in a series and when I agreed to review it, that wasn't indicated. So, instead of knowing the characters, knowing the backstory, there were times when I felt lost. I kept thinking, this has to be a book two, no author would just dump you into a story like this. So, my recommendation is to pick up the first three books and *then* buy this one. It will be well worth it, trust me!

Fall of Sky CityFall of Sky City Book 1 : Amazon – Kindle| Amazon – Paperback| Goodreads

Praise for Fall of Sky City
Wow! What did I just read?? The story was deliciously complex, full of fear, wonder, magic, gadgets, gizmos, one heck of a psycho Queen and wonderful friends. Every character brought something to the story, each with a unique personality that came to life through the book, each with their own fears to overcome. Victoria Limbert I love the world Blooding has created. She managed to create it in a way that it combines specs of all my favorite movies, books, etc. It’s a mixture of young adult fantasy, steam punk, dystopia, sci-fi, paranormal and even some tiny bit of romance. Fall of Sky City is a diverse book that is intense, a little bit violent, and a whole lot of awesome! I look forward to reading the next book of the series! Unputdownable Books SM Blooding is a new author to me, but this is definitely not the last book I’ll read by her. Synn El’Asim is a powerful character–the reader sees him grow from a young man who has not yet come into his power to a strong man who is courageous enough to fight for what he believes in–his family and his people. The world building Ms. Blooding does is nothing short of remarkable. A world composed of flying ships, ice worlds, danger, and intrigue. My World of Dreams This book is action-packed and intense. You feel like you’re part of the drama. This story is intense. The action is perfectly paced. I had trouble putting the book down. I really felt for Synn from the very beginning. He goes through so much. As soon as he gets his mark, he is plunged into one situation after another. Queen Nix, who is horrifying by the way, pushes Synn to new levels, in more and more diabolical ways. With the help of friends and family, Synn becomes a strong leader. Waiting on Sunday to Drown I’m amazed of the world Blooding has created and built. It has Sky, Land, and Water Cities. These cities each has its own technologies, language, and a whole different way of life. These worlds remind me a lot of Avatar the Last Airbender and Star Wars, which I both loved wholeheartedly.Bahrain Newspaper Article Review!

A quilt holds the secret to a killer still at large---and who his next victim will be.

Although detective Julian Frazier is working hard on the case, Sophia unknowingly frustrates him because her inability to speak thwarts her eyewitness evidence. The fact that Julian is undeniably attracted to Sophia doesn't help either, so Julian hides his feelings as concern for a trauma victim and focuses instead on finding the killer.

I couldn't put this book down. I tossed it into my backpack on errand day, knowing I would bit sitting around during oil changes and tire changes. Once I started reading it, I actually wished these things took longer than they did! Sophia's strength during such a horrible time drew me in and the way that Julian and Charlie come to her aid, far beyond what their job entailed, made me feel a spark of hope for humanity. Even if you're not a fan of quilting, I can't see how you can't be a fan of this book.

While I really thought that I would love this book, I was felt feeling a bit flat after I finished it. It's been a few days now and I haven't quite figured out why that is. The writing was great, the characters were fun and getting a little behind the scenes into shows like Cupcake Wars was really cool but something just didn't come together for me with this one. Now that I think about it, I think it had to do with the character development. Kat's family dynamic is made to be a pretty big deal but the book doesn't really focus much on the interactions between family members. There are also mentions of her past relationship but it's also not really given any sort of focus. All in all, I'm dubbing this one a "sweet story" that is worth a read, but it's not going to make my top list this year.

Book Review: Joyful

A young Amish couple gets a second chance at love in New York Times bestselling author Shelley Shepard Gray's final book in her Return to Sugarcreek series.

Randall Beiler is doing his best to put his family and the farm's needs first, even forsaking love. But though he tries, Randall knows he needs help caring for his younger siblings and keeping the house together.

When his brother offers pretty Elizabeth Nolt a job taking care of the house and cooking for the family, Randall is furious---and guilty about the way he once broke Elizabeth's heart. But when he learns that Elizabeth and her grandmother are struggling to make ends meet, he knows the offer, no matter how painful, is the right thing for everyone.

Elizabeth wants to refuse---to stay far away from the man who hurt her---but she needs the money. Though she vows to protect her heart, spending time in the Beiler household makes Elizabeth realize that, while she's older and wiser, her love for Randall still burns strong.

Randall, too, seems to want something more. But does he want Elizabeth because he truly loves her---or because he needs a housekeeper? If Randall sincerely wants something more, he must find a way to show Elizabeth---or risk losing his chance at love forever.

Oh how I hate to see a good series end. It seems like just when you feel as if you know everyone and you can't wait to see what happens in their lives, it's all over. It had been quite some time since I had read another book in this series and so, in some ways, it was like learning about everyone all over again. Like the other book, I very much enjoyed immersing myself into Sugarcreek. This book showed a side of the Amish community that I haven't seen in other books...money and the need for it. It's easy to think of the Amish world as that of a fairy tale land, but in this book, the reader gets to see that money worries touch everyone. I won't give anything away but I was so happy in the way that the author wrapped up stories that I had followed through the other books, as well as Randall and Elizabeth's story.

Book Blast: MS Madness

Yvonne deSousa’s diagnosis of relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis came with an insightful declaration from a new doctor (“MS Sucks”) and a brother’s helpful advice (“You could totally get one of those handicapped parking plates now”). What followed was a year of MS-adventures: “accidentally” kicking an officious male doctor in the crotch, becoming an undercover agent to pay for medication made from Chinese hamster ovary cells, discovering the amazing effects of legal speed, and battling her arch-nemesis, the dreaded food group-vegetables. Throughout her MS journey, Yvonne learned how to use humor to find acceptance in her diagnosis and how to smile in the face of chronic illness. Life with multiple sclerosis can be daunting, but Yvonne shares her giggles at the bizarre world she has unwittingly entered and the new perspectives it has given her on life. MS Madness! makes us realize that with a sense of humor, we can survive anything. “MS Madness! A ‘Giggle More, Cry Less’ Story of Multiple Sclerosis combines defiance with humor, the secret weapon of the sick. Laughter has carried me a greater distance than conventional medicine ever will. In the end, attitude drives well being.” -Richard M. Cohen, NY Times best-selling author of Blindsided and Strong at the Broken Places

Author Bio yvonne

Yvonne deSousa has worked as a street sweeper, a shell seller, a babysitter, a candy peddler, and a guest house manager, all before the age of sixteen. Later on she worked as a waitress, sales clerk, library assistant, victim’s advocate, and at the front desk of a doctor’s office. Two years before Yvonne’s diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, a relative volunteered her to write an article for a local newspaper. Little did she know it was the beginning of a writing career. When MS threatened to turn her into a lunatic, she started writing more frequently and quickly discovered that writing about the insanity that is MS was helping to keep her sane. Her work has appeared on CapeWomenOnline.com, and in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Finding My Faith and Something On Our Minds, Volumes 1 and 2. Yvonne also writes a weekly blog on www.yvonnedesousa.com the website that uses a giggle stick to beat up on MS. Since finishing MS Madness! A “Giggle More, Cry Less” Story of Multiple Sclerosis, she has started presenting programs designed to help others use humor to help cope with chronic illness. Yvonne enjoys writing, laughing, and resting. She lives by her personal mottos, “how you deal affects how you feel” and “my MS is not your MS and your MS is weird!” Contact her at Yvonne@yvonnedesousa.com
