Book Review: What if it's Love?

8:00 AM 0 Comments
Can a Paris bistro heal a broken heart? Introverted heiress Lena moves to Paris to nurse old wounds reopened by her neglectful boyfriend, and decide what to do with her life. Enter Rob, a charismatic and handsome Frenchman who waits tables at La Bohème - a café on Lena’s street - and has big dreams. He makes her laugh and forget her insecurities. She stirs something infinitely tender in his soul. Before they know it, they’ve fallen for each other, even though both had good reasons to fight the budding love. But their passionate romance is cut short when she discovers his dirty secret. When their lives intersect again three years later, will Lena have enough faith in Rob to give him a second chance? And can Rob be worthy of her trust? Fans of "Amélie" and "Friends" will savor this warm and funny tale of love, betrayal and finding out where you belong.

===========================
Another book that kept me reading far past when I ought to have been asleep. What if it's Love? made me smile, it made me cry and it made me wonder if Paris isn't really the city of love. If I'm lucky, maybe one day I'll be able to find out. I love how this book wasn't "easy". Instead of cutting a clear and easy path for Lena and Rob to be together. There were bumps, there were bruises, marriages, babies and so much more. If you want a great romance where you're never quite sure, up until the end, if they're going to live happily ever after, then this is going to be one you want to pick up.

Terminally ill Lynette Lamb is forced to reunite her wayward son and grandson. Her options are as limited as her strength and mobility. Through a fateful series of events, the rejoined pair will leave Earth to become part of a colony orbiting a new planet. Sam Austin and his wife mourn the loss of their only child and decide to make a fresh start at the space station. The same ship holds the one who will fulfill the dark planet’s prophecy, but a demonic force boards to stop the vessel. The demon’s obedient but unwilling servant is sent on a suicide mission to keep the ship from reaching its destination.

============================
I have mixed feelings about this book. I was loving it, couldn't stop turning pages and then it changed for me. I think my troubles come in that I wasn't expecting this book to take a Christian turn. It threw me off and while the book was still really good, I just wasn't as into it. That being said, I suspect that it's one that I'm going to return to and now knowing that element is involved, I'm going to be far more into it than I was on my first go round. All in all, another recommended book that I certainly wouldn't stop you from getting a copy of.

10:00 AM 0 Comments
Marriage experts Peter and Heather Larson and David and Claudia Arp propose 52 fun, creative ideas for meaningful yet inexpensive dates that will help energize relationships.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It's tough to review a book about great dates, when you're not currently dating. However, I do have faith that somewhere down the road, some guy and I are going to start dating and this book will come in handy!
It's broken down into categories of dates, such as At-Home, Outdoor, etc. I'm not sure that all of them really fall into the $10 category, but I bet that you guys can get creative within the ideas. After all, every date should include a little bit of the people involved, don't you think?
I love how this book is organized, the fun ideas that it includes, and honestly, I'm just missing the guy! If you're interested in checking out this book, head on over to Amazon, pick it up and start planning for some fun dates ahead!
Book Review: A Bouquet of Love
8:00 AM 0 Comments
Cassia Pappas has found herself in a nearly impossible situation. She wants to spend her time immersed in her new job at a Galveston Island floral shop, arranging blooms and brightening occasions with her lovely creations. But her huge Greek family--especially her father--has other ideas. They've all relocated to Galveston to open up a new family restaurant location on the Strand--directly across the street from the Rossi's popular pizza place--and they want Cassia's full participation.
To make matters worse, as Cassia is trying to develop a strong professional relationship with Galveston's premier wedding coordinator, Bella Neeley, her own father is intent on stealing all of the Rossi family's faithful customers. Not exactly the best way to get into Bella's good graces!
Still, at least Alex, that hot delivery guy from the nursery, is always hanging around the flower shop . . .
Fan favorite Janice Thompson gives readers one more romp with Bella, Galveston, and the bustling wedding biz in the final installment of her popular series. Anyone who loves quirky families, loads of laughter, and tender romance will find themselves hooked.
===========================
Hooked sums it up nicely. I was hooked on the other books in this series and this one wasn't any different. Poor Cassia! She really found herself in quite a pickle more than once. This is one of those great books where you'll laugh, you'll groan and you'll be thrilled to catch up with some of the characters that you met in other books. Every time Cassia's father came up with a new idea, I chuckled and wondered how I'd do in a family like theirs. It was full of love, but also had a uniqueness that no other family could compete with. If Janice Thompson ever wants to go back to Galveston, I'll be along for the ride.
BIO
Bella Ross wrote her first book (a novel) at eighteen a la Jackie Collins. But back then, unbeknownst to her, life was about to take her on a detour. As she set off on her new course, her dream of writing took a backseat. But after many years of worldly pursuits, the urge to write returned. Don't miss Sarah Sundin's hot-off-the-press novel, In Perfect Time. Publishers Weekly gives it an enthusiastic thumbs up: “Sundin excels at well-researched historical detail . . . with such accurate depictions of culture and setting that we are fully immersed in the times as well as in the story. The strength of relationships forged in war and the apprehension of God in times of trouble infuse this well-crafted novel with substance and light.”
Sarah Sundin seamlessly weaves together emotion, action, and sweet romance into a tale that transcends time and calls us to believe in the power of love.
============================
While this is a book in a series, I was thrilled to find out that it stood alone quite well and I wasn't left feeling lost or like I immediately had to go and purchase the other books just to find out what was happening in the ones that I had. Taking place during WWII, the author could have easily found herself bogged down in the tons of details and facts, but she doesn't. She gives the reader just enough detail to understand what is happening and to form a picture in your mind and then she moves on to the plot. When I first started reading, I thought that I knew the characters but before long, I found out just how wrong I was. The characters continue to develop and you see new pieces of them as the book progresses. I won't give anything away, I'll just say if you like historical romance or historical fiction, you're going to enjoy this book.
Wow! What a serious rollercoaster of emotions wrapped up in one fantastic book! Seriously, don't pick up this book unless you're ready to become heavily invested in the lives of the characters. This book is actually two books in one, but don't let that stop you. The issues faced by these couples are very real issues and the author does a great job of leading the reader through to the other side. I'm going to go looking for the other books in this series because I can only imagine how worth reading they are as well!
=================
As some of you know, I have a tiny job within the comic book industry. I'm the editor for a great indie comic. However, as a storyteller, I've wondered if I could write for that same industry. So, when this book because available for review, I jumped straight on it and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. Within the first few pages, I'd grabbed a pen and was underlining and making notes in the margins (yes, I'm one of those..) because I knew that this would be a book that I would come back to time and time again. Mr. Bendis obviously knows his stuff, but what I love is that you don't just get his viewpoint. He brings in others and they share their stories and tips. The book is filled with fantastic art in all its forms..from sketches to completed pieces. If you have a love for comics, an interest in comics, want to write for comics..I highly suggest that you pick up this book. It's not going to be leaving my nightstand anytime soon.
Why Robin Williams' Death Matters
8:33 PM 0 Comments
By now, you've probably seen hundreds of posts about Robin Williams committing suicide. Personally, I've walked away from social media because every time I see one, I find myself sinking lower and lower. Why? Because it's too close to home.
I've been there. I've stood on the edge of that abyss and even though that I know that there's no coming back from it, I've stared into the abyss and listened to the demons that whispered that the world would be better off without me, that my children would be well cared for and loved by their father and others, that those who love me most would be better off not having to deal with the ways my mood would swing. It is only by the grace of the gods that I've never taken that final step.
What I have done though is hide. I have hidden my passions, my desires and so much more because I have a disease. I've written about it here in my braver moments. There are times when I tell myself that my story could help others and just because I have this it doesn't mean I'm any less of a person than anyone else on this planet. Then, without fail, I hear someone make a comment like, "You just need a positive outlook." or something along the lines of suck it up, you can choose to be happy. That's when I go back into hiding. Sure, those things might be true for a person who is sad or unhappy but not for someone like me. I can't just suck it up. I have Bipolar 2.
For a long time, I didn't know what was wrong with me. I just knew that sometimes I was miserable and sometimes it was like I felt nothing..I was in a void. I would put a smile on my face and fake my way around people because I didn't want anyone to know that I wasn't like them. I always knew that I wasn't like everyone else. I just didn't know why.
It wasn't until someone who I loved accused me of not having any passions, of taking on those around me, that I realized that somewhere along the road, something had stolen my life from me. I was living more in survival mode than I was living in the world. It took losing someone I loved to realize just how far I was gone. Granted, he wasn't right about most of what he said..I had passions, I just wasn't living them, but it was my wake up call. It was then that I looked for help.
I don't know if Robin Williams was truly diagnosed with Bipolar, but it wouldn't surprise me if he had been. You'd be amazed at how many brilliant people suffer from this disorder. Perhaps it's the universes way of "making it up" to us. You can be absolutely brilliant, hysterically funny, but you have to suffer for it. Perhaps it's just an unlucky draw of the brain chemistry. I don't know, but I know that he was brilliant but that he struggled. His addiction issues have been spoken and written about. If you looked in his eyes, there was a sad, haunted look about them. He was a man that I feel knew great joy and great sorrow. He was a man that so many looked up to, but in the end, his demons won and the world has lost a great man.
It is because he is a great man that I hope people don't stop talking about this for a long time. I want attention to be drawn to mental health.  I want people to become aware of the fact that depression and things that have depression as a symptom are diseases and not just a case of the blues. I want people to understand that just because we may have these things, it doesn't make us less human or that our feelings don't work. The problem is that they work overtime. Something that might make a "normal" person sad, might knock me down...and sometimes, when I'm knocked down, it's very hard to get back up again. It takes a lot of energy to live with depression, bipolar or any number of other mental illnesses. We are some of the strongest people you will ever meet because of this. The other side of that coin? Sometimes we will be some of the most fragile.
So, the next time you notice that I'm a little more down than usual, please don't tell me to pull myself out of it. Stop and give me a hug. I don't need your advice. I know that my brain is overreacting. If I choose to vent things out to you, realize that it means that I trust you because I still hide this side of myself. I've had my diagnosis for over a year now and I've still not told my children or my ex-husband. I've put it on Facebook and I've put it on here, but I don't tend to mention it otherwise because there is still such a huge stigma attached to it. I'm hoping that by slowly coming out of my own shell and writing about it, people will come to realize that I'm still the same me..I'm just showing you more of who I am.
Book Giveaway!
All Covers Large
"What is steampunk?"
The easy answer is that steampunk stories are set in the 19th century Victorian era when steam-driven technology was primary, corsets were tight, and tea was a formal affair. But that's like saying science fiction is about spaceships… when the genre is much broader, deeper, and more amazing than that. (And yes, steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction.) With a thriving real-life steampunk culture that is very do-it-yourself in inventing characters, costumes, and gadgets, the real answer is that steampunk can be virtually anything you want it to be. It's this tremendous devotion to creativity that actually drew me in to writing steampunk in the first place (along with the gorgeous costumes!). In this steampunk bundle, we have an east-Indian fantasy romance, a Asian-flavored pirate love story, a Shakespearean retelling, two stories set in a common world with a floating island, a young adult adventure about a lightning invention, and a story that uses Arcane Science in the modern world. These stories are perfect examples of the truly rich diversity of steampunk stories… while each also portrays a world where steam technology shifts the ground under their character's feet. We think of the Victorian era as being somewhat repressed, but it really was a time of tremendous change: class divisions, and the aristocracy it supported, were being challenged by the everyday men and women who were bringing about amazing technological advances. Science was on the rise! And the beautiful costuming and formal traditions of the past were coming into conflict with those first hints of the modern world. Steampunk stories in general resonate with readers not just because of their fun, escapist fantasy—a flight into the past when things were simpler, adventures were fought with sword and gun, and social strictures brought some order to the world—but because the upheaval wrought by technological change still resonates with our real lives today. What is steampunk? It's a story like any other story: a chance to escape the world for a few hours, to live in the wilderness of an author's imagination, to adventure, to fall in love, to die for one's friends. It's classic storytelling in a visually rich, emotionally gripping era that still resonates with us today. Plus you get to rollick about in corsets and top hats, inventing gadgets and saving the world from the villains who turn that fantastic steam technology to their own dastardly purposes. Strap on your goggles and prepare for the ride! – Susan Kaye Quinn The initial titles in the bundle (minimum $3 to purchase) are:
  • Black Mercury by Charlotte E. English
  • Zelda Pryce by Joseph Robert Lewis
  • The Machine God by MeiLin Miranda
  • A Midsummer Night's Steampunk by Scott E. Tarbet
If you pay more than the bonus price of just $10, you'll get another three books:
  • Lumière by Jacqueline E. Garlick
Book Review: Armored Hearts
8:00 AM 0 Comments
When a crippled young lord rescues a girl falling from a tree, it reveals a secret about himself and his mother's side of the family that could put him at the center of a war with beings he thought only existed in fairy tales.
Tristan Gareth Smyth lived his entire life stuck at home at Waverly Park and left behind while his Grandfather makes trips to London, all because of his blasted wheelchair.
Then an American heiress falls in his lap, literally, and he must find a way to keep her at a distance to protect not only his secret, but everyone around him from an assassin sent to kill him.
===================
When I chose this book to review, I honestly had no idea what to expect. I haven't read much in the Steampunk genre and to mix fantasy into that...well, I had no idea what I was in for. As I flipped each page, I fell deeper and deeper into a story that left me eagerly awaiting the next part of this series because I just have to know what's going to happen to Tristan and everyone else involved in this tale. If you have a chance to pick this one up, I can't recommend it enough. You might be in for an adventure of a lifetime.
Book Review: The Butterfly and the Violin
7:00 AM 0 Comments
Welcome to the launch campaign for debut novelist Kristy Cambron's The Butterfly and the Violin. Romantic Times had this to say: "Alternating points of view skillfully blend contemporary and historical fiction in this debut novel that is almost impossible to put down. Well-researched yet heartbreaking. . . ."
A Mysterious painting breathes hope and beauty into the darkest corners of Auschwitz—and the loneliest hearts of Manhattan.
Manhattan art dealer Sera James watched her world crumble at
the altar two years ago, and her heart is still fragile. Her desire for
distraction reignites a passion for a mysterious portrait she first saw as a young girl—a painting of a young violinist with piercing blue eyes.
In her search for the painting, Sera crosses paths with William Hanover—the grandson of a wealthy California real estate mogul—who may be the key to uncovering the hidden masterpiece. Together Sera and William slowly unravel the story behind the painting’s subject: Austrian violinist Adele Von Bron.
A darling of the Austrian aristocracy of 1942, talented violinist, and daughter to a high-ranking member of the Third Reich, Adele risks everything when she begins smuggling Jews out of Vienna. In a heartbeat, her life of prosperity and privilege dissolves into a world of starvation and barbed wire.
As Sera untangles the secrets behind the painting, she finds beauty in the most unlikely of places: the grim camps of Auschwitz and the inner recesses of her own troubled heart.
===========================
I fell in love with this book from the very first page. Even though the book moves back and forth through time, I was never lost or confused. Adele's story made me smile, made my heart ache and so much more. It's hard to write about this one without giving the plot away because I just want to gush over it, but please do not hesitate to go and buy this book. I promise you that you will have absolutely no regrets. I've never seen a debut novel that was so incredibly well written with characters that you feel like you know.
Book Review: Surviving Henry
11:03 AM 1 Comments
You don't always know what you're getting into when you bring home a puppy. Enter Henry, a boxer who suffers from Supreme Dictator of the Universe Syndrome. He vandalizes his obedience school, leaps through windows, cheats death at every turn, and generally causes his long-suffering owner Erin Taylor Young to wonder what on earth she did that God would send this dog to derail her life.
Through his laugh-out-loud antics and escapades, Henry will steal readers' hearts. Anyone who has ever owned a dog, especially a canine catastrophe like Henry, will enjoy this lighthearted book about a dog who brings new meaning to the concept of unconditional love.
===================
When I first saw this book, my initial reaction was "Oh, another Marley and Me." I'm not going to say that I was wrong, but I will say that even though both books were about "problem puppies", you really can't go wrong with a well written book that makes you laugh, chuckle and just shake your head. It made me very thankful that all of the dogs that we'd had over the years were "normal." I admit that I was hooked from the very first sentence of this book and had a really tough time putting it down. Thank goodness it was a quick read! I highly suggest this one to my dog loving friends. It's cute, fun and an easy read.
