Book Review: Four Weddings and a Kiss

8:00 AM 0 Comments
In 1885 five western preachers sit around a campfire talking about unlikely couples they've seen God bring together.

“Spitfire Sweetheart” by Mary Connealy

Maizy Place is an unruly tomboy. When she causes an accident, injuring neighbor Rylan Carstens, she becomes his unlikely caregiver. Rylan has never noticed how pretty his infuriating neighbor is, and he never expected to fall in love.

“Love Letter to the Editor” by Robin Lee Hatcher

Molly Everton is the outspoken daughter of the town newspaper's owner. When her father brings in an outsider to be editor, she tries to drive him out of town. But Jack Ludgrove is not intimidated. He’s resolved to change Molly's mind about him—as an editor and as a man.

“A Cowboy for Katie” by Debra Clopton

Katie Pearl is uninterested in men and love. But she needs help on her ranch and hires Thad Rayburn, a wandering cowboy looking to make a buck. Will Thad change Katie’s mind?

“Saving Grace” by Margaret Brownley

Grace Davenport is either the unluckiest woman alive—or a killer. When her third husband is found dead, Grace is arrested. Attorney Brock Daniels isn't interested in the case—until he meets Grace. Only a miracle will prove her innocence, but the joining of two lonely hearts may be their saving grace.

It's not often that I curl up with a book that's filled with novellas by multiple authors. Quite often, they feel a bit disjointed because each author has their own style. In this case, the prologue sorted that out right quick. The stories were being told by four different men, so they'd have their own tone and style. If I'm completely honest, as much as I enjoyed this book, I think the prologue was my favorite part! There was a humor in these men that just made me smile. I'd put this down as another great before bedtime read..where you can read a section or the whole book and go to sleep smiling.

Four best-selling romance novelists bring tales of feisty heroines, stubborn heroes, and unlikely love in the Wild West in Four Weddings and a Kiss. Don't miss the latest from the Western Brides Collection from Margaret Brownley, Robin Lee Hatcher, Mary Connealy, and Debra Clopton.

Book Review: Blind Trust

12:49 PM 0 Comments
Kate Adams had no idea she was carrying counterfeit money, and she can't believe that it came from her sweet neighbor. Or that it lands her in the middle of another one of Detective Tom Parker's investigations. Determined to prove her neighbor's innocence, Kate stumbles into a pit of intrigue that is far deeper than a two-bit counterfeit operation--and strikes too close to home for comfort. As family secrets come to light, her world--and her budding romance with Tom--begin to crumble. To Kate, it's clear that she won't be safe until she uncovers all of Port Aster's secrets. But is it too late for her and Tom?

Award-winning author Sandra Orchard draws readers into a world of rogues, red herrings, and romance as she unfolds the continuing story of amateur sleuth Kate Adams.

==================
When I realized that this was book 2 in a series, I was a little nervous that I'd be lost from the beginning. It was a major relief when that didn't happen. While it's the second book, plenty of backstory is offered that it can easily work as a stand alone book. The story is well paced, the characters are well developed and the story keeps you reading. I was really enjoying the book right until I hit the end...well, except it wasn't an end. It was a cliffhanger that means if I want to learn what happened, I have to buy the next book. I really dislike endings like that. I'd much prefer to buy another book in a series because I want to instead of feeling like I have to so that the previous book can have its ending. So, if you pick up this book, be warned that's what's going to happen. Other than that, it was a really good read.

Book Review: The Hatmaker's Heart

8:30 AM 0 Comments
For Nell Marchwold, bliss is seeing the transformation when someone gets a glimpse in the mirror while wearing one of her creations and feels beautiful. Nell has always strived to create hats that bring out a woman's best qualities. She knows she's fortunate to have landed a job as an apprentice designer at the prominent Oscar Fields Millinery in New York City. Yet when Nell's fresh designs begin to catch on, her boss holds her back from the limelight, claiming the stutter she's had since childhood reflects poorly on her and his salon.

But it seems Nell's gift won't be hidden by Oscar's efforts. Soon an up-and-coming fashion designer is seeking her out as a partner of his 1922 collection. The publicity leads to an opportunity for Nell to make hats in London for a royal wedding. There, she sees her childhood friend, Quentin, and an unexpected spark kindles between them. But thanks to her success, Oscar is determined to keep her. As her heart tugs in two directions, Nell must decide what she is willing to sacrifice for her dream, and what her dream truly is.

===============
Another day, another lovely read. This was one that I enjoyed more than others that I've read lately. I lost myself in the pages and the time period. I grew to despise Oscar, to love Nell and to be charmed by Calvin. The only one that I wasn't sure about was Quentin. Nell holds a lifelong crush on him and yet, as readers, we don't see much interaction between them, not even in the form of letters. This book is about a young woman coming into her own and growing up and it's one that will go on my shelves and be picked up again.

Book Review: Out of the Ruins

8:00 AM 1 Comments

Abby’s shattered faith in both God and man is challenged when the terrible earthquake hits 1906 San Francisco.

While her sister lies on her deathbed, Abby Fischer prays for a miracle. What Abby doesn’t expect, however, is for God’s answer to come in the form of the handsome Dr. Robert King, whose experimental treatment is risky at best.

As they work together toward a cure, Abby’s feelings for Robert become hopelessly entangled. Separated by the tragedy of the mighty San Francisco earthquake, their relationship suddenly takes a back seat to survival. With fires raging throughout the city, Abby fears for her life as she flees alone through burning streets. Where is God now? Will Robert find Abby, even as the world burns around them? Or has their love fallen with the ruins of the city?

=============
Oh Abby...I smiled with you, I cried with you and I held my breath as one awful thing after another happened to you. I hoped and wished for a happy ending...but I won't spoil it for others by giving away if you found one. Karen Barnett took a period of time that was tragic for so many and tells the beautiful story of one woman's journey to finding herself, letting go of others and finding love in the midst of tragedy. While some of the characters seemed a little flat to me, those of Abby and Robert stood out and kept me turning page after page. If you're a lover of historical fiction, there's a very good chance that you'll enjoy this book.

Book Review: A Place in his Heart

9:30 AM 0 Comments
Anglican Mary Langton longs to marry for love. Puritan Barnabas Horton is still in love with his deceased wife and needs only a mother for his two young sons. And yet these two very different people with very different expectations will take a leap of faith, wed, and then embark on a life-changing journey across the ocean to the Colonies. Along the way, each must learn to live in harmony, to wait on God, and to recognize true love where they least expect to find it.

This heartfelt tale of love and devotion is based on debut author Rebecca DeMarino’s own ancestors, who came to Long Island in the mid-1600s to establish a life–and a legacy–in the New World.

============================
Wow, you would never believe that this was the author's debut novel. I started reading and some unknown hours later, I put the book back down. I couldn't seem to stop reading and even though there were tears in my eyes at the end, it was well worth one very late night. Historical fiction has found a new author and one that I hope doesn't stop with just this book. By the time I finished reading, I felt as if I had been there, that I was a part of this family through their joys and their sorrows. I came to care about each of the characters and it's a rare thing for a book to pull me in that deeply these days.
