Story Time: Letter to a Lost Love

1:07 PM 0 Comments

Sometimes, when I'm driving, I pass this tree. I call it the shoe tree because over the years, people have tied their shoes together and tossed them up into it. They say that people do that to signify the end of one thing and the beginning of another. For me, it was the beginning of us. It is the precise place that I was the first time that you texted me. I remember it like it was yesterday. I glanced down at my phone, surprised to see your name there. You had never texted or called me, even though we had exchanged numbers. I wanted to text you back, to answer the very serious question that you had asked me but there just wasn't any way to do it while driving. I suggested that you call, but you never did. Yet somehow, it was still the start of us.

I will never forget sitting in a hotel lobby, your texts keeping me company as we joked about how quickly we had climbed from zero to over a thousand and counting. You said we would do something to celebrate it as soon as we were together. It was such a silly thing to celebrate but silly was so much a part of us, that it just seemed right.

We never did celebrate that achievement. Instead, us meeting took us to entirely different levels. It was amazing and somehow, it just felt right. I've never experienced anything like it before. The truth is, I've never experienced anything like us before. I've never had that sense of intimacy and belonging with anyone. I've never had that feeling of total acceptance, love and joy. We had that together and it was the most glorious thing I have ever experienced.

I will never forget that feeling. Even though I know that I will never experience it again, I will never forget it. I will hold it in my heart, even when it threatens to tear me apart. Experiences like that change a person's life and you changed mine. Sometimes, when I think back on what we had together, it's like my heart is being torn apart. No, not torn apart. It's like the memory has exploded into shards of metal that are forcing their way from the inside out. Yet still, I will never let go of how we were together and how you made me feel.

With you, I always felt beautiful. You showed me joy. You showed me what it was like to totally relax and "just be" with someone. We were silly and we were serious.  We would talk for entire days and it feel like mere minutes had passed. I was your smile and you were my strength. Together, we were an incredible team. People said we lit up the room when we were together. We made others smile with our love and infectious laughter.

Then suddenly, everything changed. The phone calls stopped. The affection stopped. You suddenly shut me out of your life. Suddenly, I went from being your best friend, lover and confidant to being nobody. I've spent weeks, nearly months now trying to figure out what I did wrong. I've spent so many hours crying that perhaps it's gone into days now.

Sometimes late at night, I dream of you. When I close my eyes, I pray that I won't but always, there you are. You're just as you were when we first met. My hand still fits perfectly in yours and your voice still whispers the words that helped me to fall in love with you. My knowing mind rebels, trying to force me from my sleep but you hold me there. I'm bound by what we once were, forced to live out the dreams of what we could have been.

I wonder if you ever dream of me or if I'm not even worthy of the memory of what we were.  Sometimes I wish that I could forget. I sit and wonder what my life would be like now if we had never met; if you had never sent that text. Would I be a stronger person? Of course, there's no way of knowing.  Deep down, I know that I would never wipe away those memories if given the option. You showed me what it was like to live again. You showed me that real love can exist.

I should go though. I know that while you've promised in the past to always read what I write, this letter is best meant for the trash can. For you to read it would be me opening myself up to even more pain. I don't know why you don't love me anymore, but reliving it with this letter won't help. The truth is, I don't think that I will ever fully heal from this. Someday, I will hear that you've found someone new and that you're in love. When that day comes, I know that my heart, no matter how healed will shatter into a million pieces. Until then, it will have a hole where your love used to live.

My love...the love that I have lost, I have but one wish for you. It is not for pain or even that someday you look back and see what so many others saw when they saw us. It is just for love. I hope that someday you love yourself enough to see how amazing you really can be. I hope that you find someone who loves you as much as I did and as much as I always will. You have great capacity for love and I hope that someday you use it for good and not as something to dangle in front of others and then snatch back when you realize you're becoming emotionally invested.

For now though, I leave you to live your life. There is no longer an us. We are again two lonely, heart hurting individuals who must now journey through life apart.  For me, though, I realize that I no longer wish to carry on alone. So, this is my goodbye. This is my final letter, my final song. Tonight, when the stars are out, I will do what I once told you that I longed to do. I will join the stars. I know I said someday my heart will shatter, but I realize now that it already has and I cannot put it back together.

You asked me not so long ago if I thought we could be close again. The truth is no. For that to happen, you would have to want it. Your actions scream that you don't. You've moved on and forgotten me and forgotten us. I am a nobody to you and so tonight, I will join the stars in their nightly vigil. I will fly high into the sky and watch over you until someone else comes along who can take care of you and love you. When that day comes, I will fall from the sky and be gone forever.

So, goodbye my love. Goodbye, the one person who I gave my everything to. You will never understand just how special that was. You were the one and only person in my entire life that I opened all the way up for and who I gave all of myself to. Tonight, I take back what I can. I take back my life the only way I know how.

Goodbye my lover, my best friend, my everything...and remember..tonight, when you glance up at the stars, remember that there is a new one there and maybe think of me.
Yours in life and in spirit.
K

Clean Life, Clean House Challenge: Week 30

3:19 AM 0 Comments
I have to say a serious shout out to Kate because now that she's sucked me into the artist chat, I'm becoming far more productive online. I sit there in a virtual room, watching artists work and feel like a slacker, so I pull out a project and get to work.

Of course, it keeps me sitting here at the computer so not much else gets done during that time. Although, it's so late at night that nothing else would get done anyway so it balances out!

Last week, I was camping all week long though I did manage to add half a dozen more items to our Goodwill clothing bag. This week is going to be totally insane, as well. Roger starts football camp tomorrow and that runs until Thursday night. Then, on Friday, I fly to Phoenix for 10 days! I'm going to do my best to actually write up next week's challenge ahead of time and schedule it to post for y'all on time. We'll see how successful I am, though. The best of intentions and all that...

This week, the challenge is to head back to your living/family rooms and check out those dvd/video game racks. Do you have any that you never watch or never play? Pass them on to someone who might love to have them. How about those that have scratches or don't play? If you want to replace them, add them to something like an Amazon wishlist to remind yourself and get rid of the broken ones. There's no reason to hold onto them. Clear the space and smile at the organization!

Comic Review: Ancient Dreams

2:16 AM 0 Comments
It's the start of another insane week and I wanted to be sure to get y'all this review before it gets started! This is another book that I picked up in Chicago and I have to say that the lovely lady who handed it to me was indeed lovely. She was someone who you could just tell was totally passionate about what she did. Those are the people who I love working with.

"Abandoned by her mother and aunt to live alone with her twin sister Lily, Cara Wynter is eighteen and has been suffering from these horrific, painful nightmares of her own death for the last thirteen days. Born of a peculiar family boasting of dark witches and strangepowers, her already shaky sanity is trembling at a breaking point when a mysterious stranger named Drake rescues her and whisks her away on a trip across Europe to his home. There, Cara finds a book written by Drake’s sister that will guide her search for answers to the deadly nightmares that plague her.

As she explores the book’s pages, she finds herself transported to the blood-drenched sands of ancient Sparta, where she finds her eternal soul trapped in the form of another woman named Arias. She quickly understands that to preserve her life and love in the present she must merge with her eternal soul in the past. To do that, she has only thirteen days to remember, understand, and break a deadly curse that threatens both Arias’ life and her own. Now more determined than ever to end the fear and horror of her dreams and preserve a centuries-old love, she charges forward, facing her deepest fears to save a god she has treasured for longer than memory and a love that she cannot live without."

The Good : The artwork in this book is absolutely gorgeous. From the pencils (Mike Krome/Dawn McTeigue) to inks (Dawn McTeigue) to colors (Sabine Rich), it just comes together in such a way to powerfully back the fantastic story that JP Roth has put together.

The Bad : My copy of issue #0 got kind of beat up while waiting in the "Magic Review Bag." This is 99% my fault but I'm going to say the other 1% is due to the lack of a 3rd staple in the middle of the spine. Yep, that's the worst thing I can come up with.

The Summary :  Seriously, this book is totally worth looking into picking up. The story is one that draws you in and you want to know what happens next. The artwork is gorgeous. Run, spring, sign up for a marathon and go find this book. With any luck, I'll be back later to tell all of you about upcoming issues because this is one I'm putting on my follow this book list.

For more information on this book, check out its website or on Facebook.

Book Review: The Realms Thereunder

2:47 PM 0 Comments
I received this book around the same time that I received the book in the previous review. Sadly, life got in the way and this really great book got set aside and forgotten..until now!

"Ancient legend tells of an army of knights that will remain sleeping until the last days.

The knights are waking up.

A homeless man is stalked by a pale, wraithlike creature with a mouthful of needle-sharp teeth. Maimed animals and a host of suicides cluster around a mountain in Scotland. And deep beneath the cobbled streets of Oxford, a malicious hoard besieges a hidden city.

Freya Reynolds is a university student with a touch of OCD and an obsession with myth and folklore. Daniel Tully is living rough on the streets of Oxford, waging a secret war against an enemy only he can identify. Years ago, they found themselves in a world few know is real. They have since gone their separate ways and tried to put that adventure behind them.

But the mythical world is now bleeding into our reality—a dark spiritual evil that is manifesting itself in forgotten corners of the British Isles. Alex Simpson is a Scottish police officer who specializes in hunting mythical creatures. Together, they must confront the past, the present, and points beyond to defeat the ultimate threat to humanity.

Nothing they've seen so far prepares them for what awaits . . . in The Realms Thereunder."

Doesn't that sounds exciting? It is! This book is filled with characters that are both likable and at times, lovable. You not only follow along with Daniel and Freya on their present trip but right along side, you learn about their previous trip and a quest that doesn't seem to be finished. The book isn't a difficult read and my biggest "frustration" was that when I reached the end, I didn't have the next book of this trilogy on hand to find out what happens next!

I can certainly recommend this book and hope that all of you check it out, even though it took me forever to tell you about it.

Book Review: Love Food & Live Well

1:30 PM 0 Comments
I am totally embarrassed to admit that I've had a couple of books sitting here for well, we're not going to say how long, just waiting for me to review them. I'll be honest. When the chaos of the past year hit, these were sat aside and over time, I just plain forgot about them. Today, they were brought again to my attention so I'm jumping in to get them reviewed before I move onto anything else!

I had a hard time, at first, getting into this book. Chantel writes in a very witty and personal style, but this is what I call a very God driven book and while that's great, it just doesn't work for everyone. When I first started reading it, it wasn't working for me. However, please don't let that put you off. We're all at different points in our spiritual journey and what didn't work for me then, would quite likely work for me now!

What I did love about this book is that Chantel speaks as someone who has been there. She lost over 200 pounds herself and in this book, she covers everything from exercise (including some of her own that she created!) to those mysterious topics like fats, proteins and carbohydrates. She explains them in a way that anyone could understand.

Throughout the entire book, the material is presented in an easy to understand format that sometimes feels as if you're just spending time talking with a good friend. It's my favorite style of writing (and one I hope I successfully accomplish here).  If you're looking for a book to inspire your walk with God while inspiring your healthy lifestyle changes, pick up Chantel Hobbs' Love Food & Live Well.

Clean Life, Clean House Challenge: Week 29 : Clothing

6:01 PM 0 Comments
I know we're an entire day early and that I could have just scheduled this, but nah...I'm taking my kids camping tomorrow so let's just give y'all a sneak peak and then you can start tomorrow.

Last week was a make up week and I was going to tackle that top dresser drawer. Instead, I ended up tackling my top 4 dresser drawers! I collected half a trash bag of clothes that I'll be donating.  I know it's mostly empty at this point (we're doing a massive laundry catch up right now!), but here is my after picture:

It's nice to actually be able to see what's in there and know that there's plenty of room for when I track down the rest of my underclothes!

This week, the challenge is clothing and I swear I didn't remember that so I could work ahead! I just thought it'd be a good thing to do since we have a ton of clothes that are getting washed up and needed homes.

So, for all of you..pick a drawer, pick a closet, pick a kid and go through the clothes. Toss what can't be salvaged, donate what's still in good condition and put back only what you love and what fits!

Since I already did my dressers, I'll be purging as more loads of laundry get caught up on and only putting away what I really love and will actually wear.

The Sadness

12:03 AM 0 Comments

Once upon a time, there was a little girl. Like all little girls, she started out life happy and sweet but over time, she grew more and more sad. You see, this little girl, unlike most little girls learned early on in life that she wasn't wanted. Her parents gave her away because they didn't want her.  Then, the people who took her treated the other little girl there better than they did her. The little girl was always smiling on the outside though because she learned that if you cry out the outside; if you showed people your hurt, they would only take that and hurt you more. So, she always smiled and she was always happy. She was a sweet soul. She would do her best to make sure everyone else was happy, even if she couldn't be. As she grew up, so did the sadness. It became a part of her but nobody but her knew about it. She couldn't remember a time when the sadness wasn't living inside of her.

One day, she met this man. Her sadness knew his sadness and over time, they became friends and she even found little pieces of happiness with him. Her sadness didn't like this though and neither did his. If they were happy, the sadness would have to leave. So the sadness planted thoughts in their heads. They told her that one day he would hurt her and leave her. They told him that she wanted far more than she had ever said. They muddled their words and soon, the man and the woman started being sad together. He listened to his voices and pulled away from her. He took away parts of what had made them so special together. As he pulled away, she listened to the voices that said "See? I told you that he never really wanted you."

They tried to fight the sadness. They tried to be this new thing, but slowly the sadness were winning. Slowly they pulled away from one another. She spent nights crying herself to sleep because all she wanted was for him to treat her like he used to. He grew anxious as he gave into his sadness. Where once they had been an amazing team, now they struggled to find themselves. The sadness was taking over their lives and it seemed they were helpless to stop it.

She grew panicked. She was watching the one and only good thing to happen to her slip away and she was helpless to stop it. She tried what she knew. She knew they had been happy once and desperately she tried to recapture that but it takes two willing people to hold onto something and the voices, the sadness had slowly sapped away his interest. It was too late. What they'd had together was gone and unless they could hold onto each other and drive the sadness away, there was no hope. Deep inside, she knew that this was it. This was her chance at life. Without this, she would give up. She would wither away on the inside and slowly wither away on the outside but she needed him to try as hard as she was. She needed him to be the same man who would get excited just by the sound of her voice.

In the end, they couldn't hold on. They let go and in that moment, the sadness consumed them. They were alone once more, never to join together.

I was going through some files tonight and came across this. Something told me I ought to share it.

Comic Book Review: Star Crossed Galaxy

2:42 PM 0 Comments
I know you're going to fall over in shock, but I have discovered the secret to being productive...are you ready for this? You have to do things! Woah, I know..freakishly frightening, right? I discovered that if you do things, things get done and that leaves you time to do other things..like read comic books!

This pretty awesome looking book is another that some brave soul trusted me with after meeting me in Chicago at C2E2.  I say brave because let's face it, these books are someone's baby. Handing them to me must be like sending your kid off to school and waiting for that first conference where you pray you hear that your child is a genius.

So, let me fill you in on the latest book in my kindergarten class:

Star Crossed is an ongoing science fiction space adventure. The series takes place 500 years after a massive interstellar plague outbreak that nearly wiped out the galactic population and revolves around Captain Joseph Cull, an independent mercenary working for a galaxy spanning government known as the ARC. His mission is to hunt down and destroy the many pirate clans throughout the galaxy. Joined by a crew of outcasts and rogues, Cull travels the galaxy finding pirate strongholds and new worlds to explore.

Now, for my take on things:

The Good : It's not about zombies. Ok, I'm kidding. Well, yes and no. It's not about zombies but really that's not what makes it an interesting read. What makes this book different is that it's not another zombie or superhero book. It's a book set in outer space with a hard brash captain leading a group of misfits. The cover drew me in from the first time I saw it. I love the layout and the way the colors make the image pop from the page.

The Bad : Sadly, I think this is a book that could have used some color. The interior pages are done in black and white and there are times when I struggled to figure out just what was happening. Most of the time this wasn't an issue, but through out the whole book, I was wishing for a bit of color.

The Summary : If you're looking for something different, something that isn't about zombies, werewolves or vampires, this very well could be the book for you. It has an ongoing story line that promises to keep you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what adventures/mis-adventures the captain will lead his crew into next. All in all, a pretty good book that works well for that teen/adult set.

Want to know more about this book or its' creators? They're all over the internet! To purchase the book in digital format, head on over to Amazon or DriveThru Comics. Want to check out the author's blog? You can find it at Epic World Publishing. Really just want to say hi and see what they might have upcoming? Guess what..they have a Facebook page as well!

Until next time...this is your reviewer, signing out...

Clean Life, Clean House Challenge - Week 28 - Make Up Week!

3:41 PM 0 Comments
Week 28?!? We are somehow over halfway through this year and I honestly don't have the first clue how that even went and happened. It's been a mad whirlwind and it's just been over the past couple of weeks that I've been starting to feel like I have some control over things again. This is a good thing. It means that things are getting done. Things  getting done means that I'm a calmer, more contented person. All in all..things are good.

So, know what that means? I got last week's challenge done! Now, I'll confess and say that some of the items were stacked in another location. This is because I need to come up with some new organizational plan for "The Wall" aka my studio aka the office. That and I need to do some purging in there. For now though, here is my finished space!

Ta da! I have space! It's a lovely thing. This week will be a continuation of the never ending attempt at catching up on laundry. Since it's also a make up week, I'm going to go back and tackle one of my drawers. It's time to purge some clothes and to just generally tidy it up so that I can actually fit the clean clothes in the drawer again! Let's see if I can score a picture of my top drawer for you...I'm honestly a bit afraid to open it up and see just how bad it's gotten...

Hmm..I suppose it could be worse but there is certainly work to be done. I wonder when the last time I purged this drawer was..Well, I guess next week I'll be able to answer that question for you. Until then, don't forget that I love to see your before and after pictures, so please feel free to link up to your posts here!

Comic Book Review: Demolition Dark Age

6:08 PM 0 Comments
It's been a while since I've had what I'm going to call a difficult review. Sadly, that's what this one has turned out to be. Let me start out by saying that this is a brand new comic book company and clearly, they're having growing pains. Since we've all been there from time to time, you know I'm going to take it easy on these guys.

I met these folks back at C2E2 and they were really nice. Ok, I confess, it certainly didn't hurt when their writer wrote Stay Beautiful on the cover of the book to me. Granted, he might have done this for every pretty girl who came along, but I'm going to believe that it wasn't because I'm a reviewer but...Ok, it might have been. If memory serves, I saw these guys on Sunday when I looked and probably acted one step above a zombie...lol!

Folks, I tried looking online for a copy of the cover of this book or a synopsis, but they just weren't to be found. So, instead, I'm going to jump right into the good, the bad, the summary.

The Good : The art work in this book is really pretty cool. It's well drawn and the colors just pop from the pages. The story of good vs evil, including the descendants of the Four Horsemen is an intriguing one.

The Bad : This book is chock full of grammatical errors and some spelling mistakes. Y'all know this is a pretty big pet peeve for me. As a baby book, I'm willing to give it a chance to grow but it's not going to without a good editor reviewing the pages for this sort of thing.

The Summary : Keep your eyes open for Fantum Breed Entertainment. They have a lot of potential. As for this particular book, I would hold off purchasing it until there's a new printing with the grammar issues fixed. It has serious potential to turn into an awesome series, so don't write it off.

Sadly, I can't point you in any direction when it comes to learning more about these guys or their books. They have a website but it's little more than a holding page at this point. They're also on Facebook, but you have to friend request them. It's not a fan page. As such, I don't feel comfortable handing out that information.

As for me, I'm going to keep my eyes and ears open for these guys. It's one baby comic book company that I feel has the potential to grow up into something really cool.

PS If I receive cover art or further information, I will be sure to come back and update this post.

I received a copy of this book for the purpose of this review. All thoughts, comments and thoughts on how lovely I am are totally and 100% mine and always will be.

Book Review: The Crimson Battle Axe

9:28 PM 0 Comments
It's not often that a cover will draw me in to the point that I actually purchase the book without doing a bit of homework first. Of course, when you're walking the convention floor, meeting, greeting and networking, there's not a lot of time for homework of any sort. Enter, this book. I walked up to the table with the intent on giving my little sales pitch and instead walked away a bit lighter in the pocket but with a brand new book for the boys and I to check out. Either I need to get stronger or stop taking money with me to these things! Some of those folks are serious salesmen! I do have to say though that if you're passionate about your project, that will draw in a reviewer like me faster than anything. More than once, I've agreed to review a project I wasn't sure about simply because the person behind the table was so passionate about it. This author..well, he was passionate and after reading this book, I can see why.

First..our synopsis:

The Crimson Battle Axe, a sword-and-sorcery hero story about justice versus vengeance, love versus apathy, forgiveness versus bitterness, and good versus evil. Throughout the story, tough choices must be made by the main characters - they must choose the right path while constantly challenged by doubts and dark forces working against them. Through fantastic battles and tender moments, with humor and unlikely friendship, five travelers follow their destiny on an amazing quest.

Now, onto the review!

The Good : This book is one that you'll pick up and just keep reading. If I'd had the time, I think I would have read it straight through on the first run. The characters are interesting and let me tell you that the one monster that they fight had me going wow, where can I get one of those? I promise to only use it for good, but where can I find one?

The Bad : There is a lot of focus on descriptions. While this really does help visualize what is happening in the book, sometimes it was just a little bit too much. I felt as if some of the character descriptions could have been broken up a bit throughout the book and details introduced to readers as they went along.

The Summary : This book is one that is not only geared towards action/adventure/fantasy loving kids of around my boys' ages, but one that adults can enjoy as well. It's one that I intend to add to our reading shelf for those hot summer nights when the boys laze around and I read to them. I have a feeling that they're going to love meeting Gnarl, Garon, Hailstriker and the others.

If you're interested in adding this book to your collection, it can be found on the author's website as well as on Amazon.

I purchased a copy of this book because I couldn't resist the cover and the author's sales pitch. While this is uncommon, it's not unheard of.. All thoughts, opinions, general ramblings and typos are totally mine. ;)

Blog Announcement: Reviews

2:40 PM 0 Comments
Can anyone tell me who the man to the left is? Anyone? I know some of you can because some of you know him! That, my friends, is my best friend in the whole wide universe (cuz the world isn't big enough for how awesome he is), Walter. I don't believe that I've spent a lot of time writing here about him, but if you head over to Welcoming Weight Loss, I know he's been mentioned there. In fact, there's an entire post just about him. Yep, that's just how important he is.

Now, I bet you're wondering..What does this Walter fellow have to do with Katrina or this website? I mean, yeah, he's really cute and those are some dang cute kids he has there, but it's not (Almost) Wordless Wednesday. Could it be that Katrina has finally found the man of her dreams? Wait. No, that can't be it. She titled this reviews. Is she going to review him? Based on that picture alone, we could say:

A+ cuteness
A+ smile
A+ dad material

But now, that's not the kind of thing she writes here. What could it be? Katrina, please won't you tell us?

Ok, ok...first, let me say that you are right on all of those grades. Walter, well..if I start talking about him, I tend to gush. He's smart and funny and sweet and good looking and...and...see? I warned you. The truth is, any woman who manages to land this guy is going to be the luckiest woman in the world and she'd better treat him right. I might not be the right woman for him, but whoever she is..well, she'll have to be downright amazing to deserve him.

Now, for the real news...Walter has agreed to sign on here at the site! He's going to start handling some of the digital copies for review that have become more and more backlogged. Now, we're not 100% sure when he'll be starting because he's busy studying for a teaching certification. Did I mention that the man works with special needs kids? Yeah, you know how I feel about that..but as soon as he's done with the test, he's going to be bringing you reviews! Y'all know how hard it is for me to give up any amount of control so the fact that I'm excited about this means y'all ought to be bouncing up and down..in anticipation!

So, keep your eyes open for not just reviews by me, but reviews by him as well!

Clean House, Clean Life Challenge Week 27

6:01 PM 0 Comments
Since we started the Facebook group for this challenge, I have gotten lazier and lazier about posting these here and I apologize for that. This started as a blog challenge and I really would like for it to continue that way. For those who prefer the Facebook Group, please don't hesitate to head over there and send a request for an invite if you need it.

Until then, let's just jump right back in where we are, ok? This week, we're tackling our desks. Now, in this house that could be any number of spaces. There's the desk in the boys room, the desk in the office, the folding table in the office and my two tables in there as well. For this week, I decided to tackle the table where my laptop currently resides. Ready for the picture? It's not as scary as some of the spaces I've posted, but it still makes me cringe!

Yick, right?!? It looks like the dying ground of technology or something. Oh and let's just ignore the fact that I *may* have been playing a game instead of cleaning when this picture was taken. Well, it's just a starting point and not an ending point and by next Monday, I should have a much tidier space to show you. Until then, don't forget...you're not behind. Just jump in on this week's challenge. Any tidy space is better than no space!
